The Young Investors Society, led by seniors Nick Mattas and Will Green, has a trip to the New York Stock Exchange planned for after AP exams and before finals, specifically on a Friday at the end of April. For the trip, originally planned for late March, the Gonzaga investment club will journey to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to see what first-hand trading looks like. This is an extremely interesting trip for investors and the first field trip the club will take for a few years.
With the number of students who like to invest at Gonzaga and given there are classes such as personal finance, the trip to the NYSE might seem appealing, as it is a chance to experience what it is like to be a stockbroker firsthand. A very unique experience, the trip to the NYSE is also exclusive, as only seniors will be permitted to go. Nick Matta and Will Green, both seniors, are co-presidents of the Young Investors Society here at Gonzaga and are the ones who are organizing the trip, with help from Mr. Tom Every, headmaster, and moderator, and Fr. Joseph Lingan, SJ, president.
“We actually had the whole thing come together because of Fr. Lingan, who has a connection who works in the New York Stock Exchange,” said Nick Matta, senior.
Making the trip even more interesting, the floor of the NYSE has not been available to the public ever since 9/11, adding to the intrigue of getting onto the floor.
“We are going to have a tour guide to help show us around since the floor is private,” Matta said. “The reason we had to reschedule the trip originally was because of the tour guide’s schedule and finding a time they are free.”
For the past few years, Matta describes the club as “cruising, doing its own thing and taking it easy.”
As such, he and Green decided to put together something that would get people excited about the club, specifically for seniors who have stuck with the club for a few years now.
“It’s a senior-only trip, probably going to be around 15 guys, and we are getting to see trading on the floor of the NYSE firsthand,” Green said. “A unique experience for sure.”
The club has not been on a field trip in years, making the excursion to NYC that much more anticipated. Although it is for seniors only, Matta and Green hope that even though the younger members of the club can not attend the trip, they will continue to carry out the trip in future years, adding a layer to the club that has been missing for some time now. Students who are interested in investing and joining the club should reach out to Nick Matta or Will Green via email, at [email protected] and [email protected].
