The athletic department holds the Senior Signing Day Ceremony every year, and it stands as a time for the Gonzaga community to celebrate student’s accomplishments. This year, 43 senior student-athletes signed to continue to play their sport in college on Wednesday, Feb. 7. In 2023, 30 student-athletes committed to play in college, thus almost a 50% increase from last year to now. This year is the largest group of student-athletes to be acknowledged on this day, and the number has been steadily growing over the years, showing Gonzaga’s athletic dominance both regionally and nationally.
Each year seniors are given the chance to thank their parents, coaches, and teachers for all their support, as well as speak as to how special it is to play their sport at the next level.
Joseph Zorc ‘24 highlighted exactly how committing to Princeton University to play college baseball feels.
“It’s truly a dream come true. I’m excited for the opportunity to play competitive baseball at the next level as well as go to such a great school,” Zorc said.
Athletic Director Terry Kernan ‘08 explained that Senior Signing Day is not just a special day for the players but also for all the faculty and coaches.
“It’s amazing to see all these student-athletes going on to play the sport they love at the next level. It shows all their hard work and dedication paying off. Also, it’s a result of all the coaches’ hard work toward their teams and players,” Mr. Kernan said.
Ultimately, Senior Signing Day is a significant event for players, coaches, and families to come together and celebrate the achievements of student-athletes. This afternoon of excitement and celebration continues to push the next generation of student-athletes at Gonzaga.
