Attacking your goals is difficult. It is easy to get caught up in what is comfortable and easy. In my Gonzaga experience, I have been presented with a multitude of opportunities to either take the easy way out or make the tough decision that will be best long term. These experiences have taught me valuable lessons about taking responsibility and doing the right path. In my time at Gonzaga, these opportunities have been the most educational aspect of my experience.
In middle school, I was able to get by in classes by coasting and not doing that much work. I figured that I could do this in high school and be fine. This led to a rude awakening when I had to take the summer reading test on The Last Duel the first week of freshman year. I had barely read the book, and I had no idea of the difficulty of high school level tests. I received a very poor grade, and I was very discouraged.
This was a tough experience for me, but it was necessary. I needed to understand that my actions have consequences, and it was time for me to stop acting childish. I am grateful for this experience now, because it was pivotal in setting me on the right track towards being a responsible adult.
My experience on the rugby team has also taught me about toughness, grit and dedication. When my teammates and I are on the rugby pitch, each one of us has to commit to playing for the guys beside us. If I take the easy way out and play half-heartedly, then I am letting my whole team down. My teammates have pushed me to be a better player and person.
At Gonzaga, I have learned a lot of different lessons, but these experiences stand out as the most formative. Giving my best effort so that I can be the best version of myself is something that will stick with me in college and beyond.
