As developing adults, Gonzaga College High School students should always carry around water bottles for the sake of their own health and performance. If you frequently experience moments of hesitation when standing up or moving quickly, you may be dehydrated, and this message could be for you.
“If you’re dehydrated, you’re not going to focus correctly, “ said Mrs. Amy Harper, school nurse.
According to the U.S. Water Science School, water makes up about 60% of the male body, and frequently replenishing it can behold more benefits than one could imagine. As Mrs. Harper said, water helps one focus, but it actually does a lot more.
“Water helps prevent headaches, provides more energy and helps overall bodily functions,” Mrs. Harper said.
According to Mayo Clinic, water is an essential nutrient in transportation to the cells, body temperature regulation, joint lubrication, waste egression through urination and so much more. Drinking water is a simple act that affects the body more than you can imagine.
“Water is needed for our cells to function properly,” Mrs. Harper said.
If you’re wondering about how much water you should drink, Mrs. Harper recommends eight 8 oz. glasses of water. However, if a student plays sports or indulges in athletics, drinking more water in relation to the intensity of the workout would be helpful.
“Water keeps your body cool and able to sweat, so it is vital for any athletic performance,” said Mr. Conor Scott, social studies teacher and assistant cross country coach.
Consuming water before a workout provides better performance and drinking water after workouts issues a better, faster recovery.
According to Mrs. Harper, about 65% of students carry water bottles, which is good, but the more people that carry around water bottles, the healthier the Gonzaga High School community will become. Senior Ajani Bond has a large water container that helps him track how much water he should drink; he wants the health benefits and is trying to cut out juice and soda from his diet.
“I fill it up by the start of the day and aim to finish it by the end of the day,” Bond said.
For students who have a passion for sports and training, purchasing a jug container that allows them to track how much water they take in each day is highly recommended.
