Leave the calendars open for the Gonzaga Dramatic Association (GDA) presentation of the play Newsies based on the 1992 Disney film. The performances will be held March 13-14 and 20-21 at 7:30 p.m. and March 15 and 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the Sheehy Theater.
Set in 1899, New York City newspaper boys fight their boss that just raised the price for their newspapers to compete with other New York paper companies. Jack, his newly found friends David and Les Jacobs, and many other newsies on strike attack Pulitzer’s plant to combat the high prices.
Performing one of Joseph Pulitzer’s henchman Wiesel will be played by senior James Lau. The sub-villain tries to take down Jack’s crew of fellow newsies.
“It’s my fourth and final time, so I wanted to enjoy the GDA one last time,” Lau said.
The production has over 50 unique characters; it is no small task to bring all of them together to put on shows starting March 13. In the span of two weeks, the performers will have close to 16 rehearsals to work out kinks in their parts.
“The students in the play have worked really hard to get it ready to present it to audiences. The show is fast-paced, lively and fun and audiences will enjoy their time watching it,” said Allan L’Etoile, director of Newsies and English teacher.
Theatre helps students meet new friends, but it also improves public speaking skills and confidence.
“I chose to act because I enjoy the people around me, and I like the musical they chose this year,” said Jacob Wells, junior playing Finch, one of the newspaper boys.
While some students may want to be in the spotlight, that does not appeal to everyone. A dedicated group of around 25 students help build the set. Students can also join GDA and help with house crew, costumes and make up, lights and sound and performing in the pit band.
“If the kids in our program don’t have fun, we’ve failed them. If they do have fun, the audience will see it, and the show will be a success” said Paul Buckley, director and math teacher.
Ticket prices range from $10 to $15 and can be purchased online.
