Gonzaga College High School’s annual freshman retreat was postponed as COVID cases continue to plague our nation’s capital. Originally scheduled for Jan. 14-16, campus ministry has now pushed the retreat back to this weekend, Feb. 19-20, to hopefully allow for more freedom when it comes to gathering in large groups.
Every year, a group of seniors gathers to design the retreat for the newest freshman class. It is one of the most noteworthy and memorable events of one’s Gonzaga experience. Senior and assistant chairman Will Rice shared about his experience during his freshman year, and he could not speak more highly of it.
“My freshman retreat experience was the first time that I truly felt like I was a part of the Gonzaga community. I met some of my best friends at the freshman retreat and learned what it really means to be a Gonzaga student,” Rice said.
As assistant chairman, he has been working diligently for the past year to ensure that the retreat is better than ever.
Senior Rodrigo Borjas, the chairman of the retreat, explained how hard they have been working and how much thought really goes into this spectacular weekend.
“We’re all super excited to see the freshmen make the retreat and make the experience for them the best that it can possibly be. The core team has been meeting almost weekly, and after brainstorming ideas for a while, we’ve got a really good retreat planned, and we hope the freshman will enjoy their special weekend,” Rodrigo said.
With 12 senior leaders on the team making this year’s retreat possible, it is sure to be an amazing weekend. The retreat will run from Feb. 19-20, and classes on Feb. 18 will be virtual to allow the leaders time to prepare for the weekend ahead.
The freshman retreat is a once in a lifetime experience that one looks back on for the rest of their life. All members of the core team and those in campus ministry look forward to putting on another fantastic Gonzaga retreat.
