As the spring sports season swings into full effect, the varsity baseball team is making waves early in the season. They have gained attention from their solid performances against tough opponents in their first WCAC games as well as some head-to-head non-conference games. A deep combination of talent, leadership, and effort has sparked the impeccable start to the season for a team seeking another WCAC Championship.
Head Coach Greg Ladd highlighted how important the senior leadership has been in the early parts of the season.
“It’s pretty exciting to see these current seniors rise into leadership positions, and it just shows the competence of this team and their ability to be leaders on and off the field,” Coach Ladd said.
Getting off to a hot start really paved the way for the rest of the Eagles season. They were able to win big games against strong opponents in McLean and Loyola Blakefield. Following that, they had a tough introduction into WCAC play with matchups against Bishop O’Connell and DeMatha, which both resulted in wins for the Eagles.
Senior infielder Jackson Wilburn touched on just how important those early wins were for the team’s long-term success.
“I think winning early in the season versus big opponents like Loyola Blakefield and McLean was a huge jump start into the season that this team really needed going into conference play. After the big win against O’Connell and a great spring break trip, I think we are on another level and can see how a championship is definitely in the picture,” Wilburn said.
The early triumphs have boosted the team’s confidence in themselves and also solidified their status in the area as one of the powerhouse teams for this year. Each win is one step closer to the WCAC Championship that they set out for at the start of the year.
Coach Ladd emphasizes how he is really looking forward to the test of the WCAC as they approach the core of the year.
“I’m really looking forward towards WCAC play where we will play a bunch of really good teams, and our goal is to bring home the WCAC championship in such a competitive conference,” Coach Ladd said.
As the season unravels, all eyes will be on the Eagles as they look to continue their early success. With the deep talent within the team and the strong leadership from the senior captains, the varsity baseball team is in a great position to bring home a championship to Eye Street. The team plays next against DeMatha this Wednesday.
